Mountain Gorillas in Uganda

Mountain gorillas are among the world’s most remarkable wildlife species, and Uganda is one of the few places where you can see them in their natural habitat. Gorilla trekking takes you through the rainforests to spend one hour with a family of wild mountain gorillas. It is a unique wildlife experience, and every trek is different.

At Rwanda Eco Company & Safaris, we help travellers plan mountain gorilla trekking safaris in Uganda. We arrange gorilla permits, accommodation, transportation and our experienced driver guides to make your trip easier.

Where Can You See Mountain Gorillas in Uganda?

Uganda is home to a significant share of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. They live in two protected national parks in the southwest of the country.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is Uganda’s main gorilla trekking destination and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its dense rainforest is home to habituated gorilla families that visitors can track throughout the year. Bwindi has four trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. Each sector offers a different trekking experience.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located in the Virunga Mountains, near the borders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Although smaller than Bwindi, it offers gorilla trekking in a beautiful volcanic landscape.

Why Are Mountain Gorillas in Uganda Endangered?

Mountain gorillas continue to be endangered despite major conservation progress. The main threats to their safety are primarilyhabitat loss, disease transmission, poaching and pressure on forests from growing human populations. Conservation programmes help protect gorillas through veterinary care, anti poaching patrols and habitat protection. Revenue from gorilla trekking also supports communities living near the parks, giving local people an economic reason to protect wildlife.

By choosing a responsible safari operator such as Rwanda Eco Company & Safaris, you can support tourism that contributes to conservation and local livelihoods.

What Is the Best Time to See Mountain Gorillas in Uganda?

You can go gorilla trekking throughout the year. However, the drier seasons, from June to September and December to February, are popular because trails are generally less muddy and hiking can be easier. The rainy seasons, usually from March to May and October to November, also offer good trekking opportunities. The forests are lush, and there may be fewer visitors. However, trails can be slippery, so proper hiking gear is important.

How Do You Visit Mountain Gorillas?

Gorilla trekking is led by trained rangers from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. The day begins with a briefing at the park headquarters, where visitors learn about gorilla behaviour, safety and trekking rules before being assigned to a gorilla family.

The hike can take a few hours or most of the day, depending on where the gorillas are located. Rangers and trackers guide visitors through the forest to find the family.

Once you reach the gorillas, you can spend one hour observing them. You may see a silverback watching over the group, mothers caring for their young or juveniles playing in the forest.

Gorilla Trekking Permits

Every visitor needs a gorilla trekking permit issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). The number of permits available each day is limited, so booking early is recommended, especially during busy travel seasons.

At Rwanda Eco Company & Safaris, we help arrange permits, accommodation, transport and a suitable itinerary for your Uganda gorilla trekking safari.

What Should You Expect During the Trek?

Gorilla trekking is an outdoor adventure. Trails can be steep, muddy and uneven, and the level of difficulty depends on where the gorillas are located. A reasonable level of fitness is helpful, and local porters are available to carry bags and offer assistance.

We recommend wearing waterproof hiking boots, long trousers and a lightweight rain jacket. Gardening gloves can help protect your hands while moving through vegetation. Bring drinking water, snacks, insect repellent and a camera without flash.
